Humane Society of Boulder Valley

Challenge

Like many animal shelters across the country today, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley has noted a vast increase in the number of lost and unwanted animals.

The Boulder, CO Humane Society works closely with the public to ensure all lost, rescued and abandoned animals find a loving home. While Animal Control Officers patrol the picturesque college town, they must be in constant contact with headquarters, should any animal-related emergencies arise.

Solution

After receiving a gift of three Panasonic Toughbook 29 laptop computers from the Boulder Police Department, Portable Computer Systems (PCS), a Denver-based mobile data solutions provider, donated and installed Precision and Gamber-Johnson mounts into the Humane Society’s fleet vehicles. The mounts allow Humane Society Officers to communicate with headquarters and other patrol vehicles remotely while in the field.

Benefits

Thanks to the donations made by PCS and the Boulder Police Department, Boulder Humane Society Officers now have the ability to function in real-time.

Patrol vehicles are equipped with specialized laptops and mounting equipment that allow staff to communicate while traveling to and from Humane Society headquarters. Animal Care and Control Officers can look up an animal’s previous history – everything from their health history to their owner’s contact – all with the click of a button.

“The equipment installed in our vehicles by PCS has made our job - and the service we provide to the community - autonomous,” said Janeé Teague, Animal Care and Control Manager.

“We’re able to utilize resources alone, in a time-sensitive manner, as many of our cases tend to be,” she said. “Within a matter of minutes, we have the access to all the information we need. Now we can better make important, sometimes life-or-death decisions while keeping the animal’s best interest in mind.”

While funding for the organization is often limited, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley relies solely on contributions from the public. Impressively, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley provides shelter and care to over 8,000 animals each year, with approximately 89 percent of all animals successfully adopted or reunited with their owners.

Because the Humane Society of Boulder Valley strives to keep such high turnaround numbers, Teague notes that having a successful communication system in place makes it much easier. “Our job can be quite difficult at times, so having a way to keep staff on the same page is crucial,” she said.

PCS President Kathy Pakkebier agrees. “Our staff is full of animal-lovers, so knowing that the services we donated are helping to improve the lives of the animals taken in by the Boulder Valley staff reminds us why we're in this business.”
